Before this changelog
MangoMap began long before this list. These are the milestones that came first.
2018: a full self-service platform
MangoMap grew into a full self-service platform, with a rebuilt admin experience:
- A new admin console and a redesigned map editor
- Custom domains with HTTPS
- More than one user in an account
- Access permissions by group
- The proximity analysis tool
- Better support on phones and tablets
- The old embed widget was retired
2013: MangoMap launches
Years of building maps by hand became a product. MangoMap launched as a simple, self-service online GIS and web-mapping tool to make interactive maps, with no code and no servers to run:
- Maps with many layers, in an order you set by drag and drop
- Shapefile and KML upload
- Password-protected map sharing
2011: map design and hosting as a service
The mapping work became a repeatable service: map design and managed data hosting for clients beyond the first development projects. Clients got hosted maps that were always online, for their audiences to open, with no infrastructure of their own to run.
2008: where MangoMap began
MangoMap began as a mapping practice. It built web maps and hosted spatial data for international development organisations across Southeast Asia. That work taught the lesson the product is built on: a map is only useful if the people who need it can open it.
- Web maps for donor-funded programmes, for organisations such as USAID and WFP, on the open-source GIS tools of the time, MapServer and Ka-Map.
- The Cambodia Atlas, funded by DANIDA, brought scattered government datasets into one online map. It is a direct ancestor of the map applications MangoMap later made for everyone.
